Key learning points

  • In the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), the primary care weight management intervention group achieved mean weight loss of 7.6 kg and 53 out of 149 (36%) participants were in remission of type 2 diabetes after 2 years.

  • In the DiRECT extension study, 95 people continued dietary support for a further 3 years and were compared with 54 people who stopped the intervention.

  • At 5 years, those who had continued support had mean weight loss of 6.1 kg and 11 (13%) were in remission from type 2 diabetes.

An extended weight loss intervention involving appointments with a dietician or nurse every 3 months was associated with greater weight loss and higher remission rates of type 2 diabetes than the control group at 5 years.1
